Isolation and partial characterization of antagonistic peptides produced by Paenibacillus sp. strain B2 isolated from the sorghum mycorrhizosphere.

2005

ABSTRACT Paenibacillus sp. strain B2, isolated from the mycorrhizosphere of sorghum colonized by Glomus mosseae , produces an antagonistic factor. This factor has a broad spectrum of activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and also against fungi. The antagonistic factor was isolated from the bacterial culture medium and purified by cation-exchange, reverse-phase, and size exclusion chromatography. The purified factor could be separated into three active compounds following characterization by amino acid analysis and by combined reverse-phase chromatography and mass spectrometry (liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and mass spectrometry-mass spectrometry). The first com…

The major allergen of the Parietaria pollen contains an LPS-binding region with immuno-modulatory activity

2013

Background The major allergens in Parietaria pollen, Par j 1 and Par j 2, have been identified as lipid transfer proteins. The family of the Par j 1 allergens is composed of two isoforms, which differ by the presence of a 37 amino acid peptide (Par37) exclusive to the Par j 1.0101 isoform. The goal of this study was to elucidate the biological properties of the Par37 peptide. Methods In silico analysis, spectrofluorimetric experiments and in vitro cell culture assays were used to identify the biological properties of Par37. In addition, a mouse model of sensitization was used to study the influence of Par37 in the murine immune response. Results In silico analysis predicted that Par37 displ…

Pharmacological characterisation of a new model of antigen-induced pulmonary late-phase reaction in the conscious guinea pig which uses additional po…

1996

The aim of the present study was to develop a new model of allergic late-phase reaction in the airways of conscious guinea pigs (GPs) and to characterise it by pharmacological intervention. GPs were pretreated with cyclophosphamide and sensitized with ovalbumin (OA) in Al(OH)3. Weekly inhalations of polymyxin B were performed before and during sensitization and continued throughout the study period. Under cover of 10 mg/kg i.p. mepyramine all GPs still exhibited a pronounced immediate reaction (IR), peaking during the first 15 min after OA. Nine out of 15 GPs demonstrated, during screening, a reproducible (twice) second phase (late phase reaction (LPR)] of decreased airflow and tidal volume…

Drug resistance patterns of bacteria isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia at Tehran hospitals during 2009-2011

2013

Introduction: Nosocomial pneumonia remains an important cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Surveillance programs play an important role in the identification of common etiologic agents and local patterns of antimicrobial resistance. Methodology: In this study we determined the frequency and antimicrobial susceptibility of pathogens isolated from patients with nosocomial pneumonia during 2009 to 2011. Results: A total of 642 bacteria were isolated from 516 suspected samples. Acinetobacter baumannii (21.1%, n = 136), was the commonest isolated pathogen followed by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (17.4%, n = 112) , Staphylococcus aureus (15.8%, n = 102) and enterococci (8.4% n = 54). The most …

Double copies of blaKPC-3::Tn4401a on an IncX3 plasmid in Klebsiella pneumoniae successful clone ST512 from Italy

2015

ABSTRACT A carbapenem-resistant sequence type 512 (ST512) Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase 3 (KPC-3)-producing K. pneumoniae strain showing a novel variant plasmid content was isolated in Palermo, Italy, in 2014. ST512 is a worldwide successful clone associated with the spread of bla KPC genes located on the IncFIIk pKpQIL plasmid. In our ST512 strain, the bla KPC-3 gene was unusually located on an IncX3 plasmid, whose complete sequence was determined. Two copies of bla KPC-3 ::Tn 4401a caused by intramolecular transposition events were detected in the plasmid.
